Jumper’s Knee – Tendon Inflammation

Jumper's knee is an inflammation of the tendon below the kneecap. That tendon is called – the patellar tendon. It can become so inflamed that continuing sports activities is impossible, because the pain is extremely severe.

Patellar tendon

The most common cause of patellar tendon inflammation is overloading. That is why patellar tendon pain mostly affects athletes, especially those with a high jumping volume. That explains why inflammation of this tendon is called JUMPER'S KNEE.

Professional and recreational athletes are both prone to tendon inflammation, but for different reasons. Professional athletes get jumper's knee because they are under constant heavy load and must perform high-intensity jumps every day. Despite doing tendon-strengthening exercises, it can still become inflamed. Recreational athletes, on the other hand, neglect tendon strengthening while occasionally loading it extremely hard.

Patellar tendonitis

The solution for acute tendon inflammation is rest. A few days of rest and gradually increasing training load will completely relieve the pain. But if the inflammation is chronic, tendon strengthening is necessary. That is achieved through specific high-load, slow-movement exercises. From phase to phase, movement speed increases, and in the end even the most demanding activities such as jumps are performed.
