Meniscus Injury – Symptoms

If you have suffered a knee injury that healed after a few weeks of rest and you have no problems with it, but you still have a significant deficit in knee bending (flexion) range (you are nowhere near touching your buttocks with your heel), there is a high probability the injury damaged the meniscus.

Inner (medial) and outer (lateral) menisci

This mostly indicates the damage is not large, but a major deficit in knee bending (flexion) is not good. What you need to do is strengthen the leg muscles, with a gradual increase in range of motion under load.

SYMPTOMS

Other symptoms that may indicate meniscus damage are:

  • Knee locking
  • Shooting pain when bending the knee
  • A pinching sensation during deep squats or kneeling
  • Pain in the back of the knee when bending and rotating
  • Inability to bear weight equally on the injured and healthy leg
Meniscus injury

There are far more meniscus injuries that can be healed through training than severe ones that require surgery. If you opt for training, it is important to think carefully about who will lead the recovery process, because your health is at stake.
