Causes of Front Knee Pain
The knee hurts at the front far more often than anywhere else. And the reasons can vary. These are some of the most common ones:
- Patellar chondromalacia – cartilage damage between the kneecap and the thigh bone
- Fat pad inflammation – located under the kneecap
- Patellar tendon inflammation – the tendon connecting the kneecap and the shin bone
- Damage to the front (anterior) horn of the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) meniscus
- Knee constantly in hyperextension
- Fractured kneecap
- Inflammation of the patellar tendon attachment to the bone (Osgood-Schlatter) – teenagers only
- Bursa inflammation (bursitis) – there are 4 bursae at the front of the knee

There are a few more causes of pain, but they are uncommon. If you recognize any of these symptoms, we can successfully help you treat them.
